Can you visit the observatories in Hawaii?
Keck Observatory Guidestar Program, residents and visitors of the Island of Hawai’i are encouraged to visit the Observatory’s headquarters in Waimea. Visitors can view models and images of the twin 10-meter Keck Observatory telescopes as well as hear about our latest discoveries and outreach programs.

We also sell merchandise, including shirts and hats. Our headquarters is located at 65-1120 Mamalahoa Hwy in the town of Waimea. We welcome your visit.
Are they still building the telescope on Mauna Kea?
The Hoku Kea UH teaching telescope and the 10-meter Caltech Submillimeter Observatory would be the first modern observatories on Mauna Kea to be decommissioned — meaning no other telescopes will take their place. The goal for most telescope decommissioning is to return the site to its natural state.
Can kids go up Maunakea?
We do not take children under 13 years of age to the summit because they have a much higher incidence of high altitude problems. In addition persons whom are obese (Body mass index of 40.0 or over BMI calculator) are not allowed to take this trip.
Can you visit Mauna Loa Observatory?
The Observatory facilities are not open to the public. Trails into the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park to the Mauna Loa summit originate at the end of the road.

Can you go to the top of Mauna Kea?
Keep the Maunakea Rangers informed. The visiting hours to the summit area are from 1/2 hour before sunrise until 1/2 hour after sunset. For your safety we ask that visitors leave the summit once it becomes dark. If you are visiting the summit area, please leave the landscape as you find it.
